2022-22024 DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS

Students in the Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Department are curious about human behavior, particularly in the context of present and past societies. They want to better understand how people and groups interact, how institutions function, how communities form and operate. This curiosity— along with the knowledge and skills the study of sociology and anthropology provide—helps our majors succeed in the workplace or graduate study.

The study of sociology and anthropology shapes students into articulate communicators, critical thinkers and vanguards for social justice. �۲�ӰԺ’s urban setting is the ideal place to study the diversity of cultures and their commonalities. Our coursework covers socially relevant topics that spark lively discussions and deep reflection: juvenile delinquency, death and dying, health, social change, politics, racial identity, and more.

Sociology and anthropology students have a breadth of careers open to them, but many work in education, public service, criminal justice, law and the nonprofit sector. They also work in family service agencies, children and youth service agencies, homeless shelters, child and adult day care centers, community-based organizations, or domestic violence programs.

Our faculty members are a diverse group with a range of interests and specialties. They create an inclusive, welcoming learning environment for both traditional and non-traditional students and they are happy to talk to you about how a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology can help you reach your career goals.

Additionally, a sociology minor is an excellent supplement to any degree program. Majors in psychology, business, health sciences, nursing, professional security or education may find a deeper understanding of human social lives beneficial to their educational pursuits and careers.We also offer coursework towards a Certificate in Drug and Alcohol Counseling (CADC) that prepares students for licensure in the State of New �۲�ӰԺ.

The Department also offers a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree that is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and prepares students for a Certification in Social Work (CSW) and 1-year Advanced Standing MSW programs. Students will learn how to engage with individuals, groups, families, organizations, and communities. The signature pedagogy of social work is the field practicum. Students will complete a 450-hour in social service-related setting. Students will participate in several courses related to developing their social work skills, knowledge, and values in preparation for social work practice.

ALPHA KAPPA DELTA, SOCIOLOGY HONORS SOCIETY

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) is the International Sociology Honor Society. AKD was founded in 1920 at the University of Southern California by Dr. Emory S. Bogardus and became affiliated with the (ACHS) in 1967. Alpha Kappa Delta is also affiliated with the (ASA).

Alpha Kappa Delta seeks to acknowledge and promote excellence in the scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, and such other social and intellectual activities as will lead to improvement in the human condition.

BECOMING A MEMBER
Membership is open to undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members from active chapters who meet GPA standards.
