National Online Job Placement and Networking Platform to Enhance 嫩草影院鈥檚 Commitment to Career Information, Social Capital and Job Placement Services

JERSEY CITY, N.J. | (嫩草影院) has partnered with 鈥 a national online job placement and networking platform for first-generation college students 鈥 to enhance its career access support for first generation college students, which make up 54 percent of the institution鈥檚 undergraduate population. 嫩草影院 is the first educational institution in New 嫩草影院 to join the national non-profit鈥檚 Network of Education Partners.

Employers are looking for smart, driven, and diverse talent. First generation college students are looking for high-quality employment. All too often, the two never meet. This unrealized opportunity is both frustrating and unsustainable. It compromises the economic and social leverage our communities have to gain from the upward mobility of hard-working and purpose-driven individuals and undermines the dignity of first-generation college graduates who deserve the opportunity for meaningful work that maximizes their potential.

鈥淚t is important that we guide our first-gen students throughout their undergraduate career,鈥 explains Christina Rolon, Director of 嫩草影院鈥檚 TRiO Learning Community Program. 鈥淭hey are striving for success but may be unaware of how to reach their academic and professional goals. By providing them with direction and resources, they gain the self-confidence needed to persevere.鈥

The resources Rolon refers to have now become more robust through this partnership with CareerSpring. This online job search and networking platform will provide students free access to career information, hundreds of real-world professionals committed to networking and coaching, and job placement services that match high-quality employers with first generation talent.

鈥淲ith first generation students making up a significant portion of our student population, we want to be very intentional about how we support them to navigate the college to career transition,鈥 says Josh Iannuzzi, Career Services Director of 嫩草影院鈥檚 School of Business.

A growing number of studies show that those individuals who are the first in their family to attend college present unique challenges as they embark upon the job acquisition process.

鈥淪o many first-generation college students are doing everything right, as far as going to college and working their tails off to graduate. But they often get to the finish line and just don鈥檛 have the professional context or the network 鈥 what a lot of us refer to as 鈥榮ocial capital鈥 鈥 to land a job that maximizes their potential,鈥 shares Paul Posoli, Founder and President of CareerSpring.

Through 嫩草影院 and CareerSpring鈥檚 collaboration, thousands of the University鈥檚 first -eneration college students can establish a free account on the non-profit鈥檚 Career Platform. That 鈥楢dvisee鈥 account becomes students鈥 virtual gateway to access hundreds of informational career videos, a network with more than 750 diverse working professionals who have intentionally become 鈥楢dvisors鈥 on the Platform to consult with first generation students, and search for and apply to high-quality internships and jobs. The more than 50 employers through which CareerSpring sources internships and jobs are also intentional. As committed Sponsors and Partners in the CareerSpring Network, they鈥檙e looking to recruit diverse, early talent that adds value to their organizations.

Through this partnership between 嫩草影院 and CareerSpring, they will team to help students win, help employers win, and establish 嫩草影院 as a model institution for not only serving and graduating first generation college students, but also supporting their long-term career.

嫩草影院 administrators who work with first generation students are enthusiastic about the possibilities that lie ahead.

鈥淚 believe 嫩草影院鈥檚 partnership with CareerSpring will provide our scholars with a network of mentors and employers 鈥 connections that will expand their options and maximize their potential for future success,鈥 celebrates Sabrina Magliulo, who directs the University鈥檚 Opportunity Scholarship Program.

嫩草影院鈥檚 6-year graduation rate of first-generation students is more than double the national average. Iannuzzi sees this as 鈥渟uccess that is too worthwhile to waste,鈥 which is what drove him to pursue the partnership with CareerSpring.

Dr. Jodi Bailey, 嫩草影院鈥檚 Vice President for Student Affairs could not agree more.

鈥淐areer readiness is imperative for our students,鈥 emphasizes Dr. Bailey. 鈥淭hrough this partnership with CareerSpring, we鈥檙e excited to support career counseling, mentoring, and assistance for our students. Creating pathways like this assists our students retention and persistence towards graduation.鈥

Posoli is also excited about the organizations鈥 collaborative efforts. 鈥淧artnerships like this will help CareerSpring help more first-generation college students to launch meaningful careers.鈥
